VISION
The purpose of the Long Island Chapter of the US Green Building Council is to mirror and advance the core purpose of the US Green Building Council locally; to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

MISSION
The USGBC-LI is committed to working with our fellow Long Islanders to improve our quality of life by improving the quality of the structures we build and the environment in which we all live, work and play.  We are committed to leaving the world a little better than we found it so that future generations have an unfettered opportunity to do the same.

100 Attend LEED Ceremony and Tour at SCCC Workforce Develop Center

On September 15th about 100 people attended a USGBC-LI plaque ceremony and facility tour of the recently awarded LEED Gold, Workforce Development and Technology Center located on the Grant Campus of Suffolk County Community College (SCCC).  Opened in SCCC_Tech-Center 22009, it features state-of the-art laboratories and classrooms for training specifc to HVAC and manufacturing technologies.

Over the past two years this facility has offered a very knowledgeable and dedicated teaching staff the proper setting in which to educate the next generation of technicians. Recognizing the need to be energy effcient and environmentally responsible is critical to our collective well being. Understanding the mechanics of how products achieve this goal and being able to install, diagnose and repair products, so that they perform to this increased level of effciency and responsibility, is a challenge that SCCC has taken head on for the beneft of all Long Islanders.

Seatle's Bullitt Center to be Greenest Commercial Structure in the World

One of the most highly anticipated development projects in the Pacific Northwest is still little more than a grid of concrete and rebar at the edge of the Capitol Hill neighborhood here. When completed near the end of next year,  though, the six-story Bullitt Center 2office building may be the greenest commercial structure in the world.

The building, the $30 million Bullitt Center at 1501 East Madison Street, is expected to set a new precedent for environmentally
friendly design and construction and in doing so would reinforce Seattle's reputation as a global leader in sustainable development.

As the future home of the environmentally focused Bullitt Foundation and other like-minded tenants, the Bullitt Center is designed to produce as much electricity as it uses, making it both energy- and carbon-neutral. The building will supply and treat all of its own water, capturing rainwater in a 50,000-gallon underground cistern.

Empire State Building Gets LEED Gold

Perhaps you've been following the massive green renovation at the Empire State Building in New York City -- a.k.a., the  $550 million Empire State ReBuilding program.  All that hard work has now paid off, not just in massively reduced energy bills for the Empire State Buildingiconic high-rise's tenants, but in the form of LEED Gold for Existing Buildings certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

This 2.85 million-square-foot building, currently nearing completion of its retrofit and repurposing, just happens to be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, proving that an old building really can learn new tricks. What's more, the process by which this retrofit was planned and implemented is now available to the general public through what building managers believe is a "game-changing analytical model," designed to reveal economically justified retrofit measures for existing buildings.

An Educational Opportunity at
St Paul's School

In the shadow of the Garden City Hotel stands an architectural and historical jewel, long forsaken but never forgotten. Earlier this year the residents of Garden City voiced their support and respect for St. Paul's School by voting overwhelmingly against Leed LOGOits proposed demolition, ensuring that this irreplaceable landmark will continue to grace the community and its residents.  Constructed in 1879 by Cornelia Stewart, widow of Alexander Turney Stewart, St. Paul's was to form the nucleus of her husband's vision of a "planned community" and served
for years as an all-boys college preparatory school. This magnifcent high Victorian Gothic structure was never intended to serve as a monument; it was designed to serve the residents of the young village.
