Leslie Szivos received a B.S., Chemistry from Kutztown University in 1987 and both a M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Seton Hall University. He was a 1989 recipient for the National Starch Award and is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Szivos is experienced in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in the areas of inorganic chemistry, material science including, for example, semiconductors and superconductors, homogenous and heterogeneous catalysts, polymers, metallurgy, nanotechnology, surfactants and analytical methods and instrumentations. He is the co-author of "An Evaluation of the Single Turnover (STO) Procedure as a Method for the Determination of the Active Site Densities on Dispersed Metal Catalysts." J. Catal., 127:675 (1991).

Edmund Gutierrez received his B.A. in Chemistry from Hunter College in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Organometallic Chemistry from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1995. Dr. Gutierrez is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Gutierrez has many years of experience in various industries, including printed circuit board technology, semiconductors, nanotechnology, materials science, and biotechnology. He also has several years of experience as an Adjunct Professor of general and organic chemistry. Dr. Gutierrez's research experience is extensive, and includes nanoparticle design and synthesis, supramolecular assembly, transition metal and main group metal chemistry, metal-ligand chelation chemistry, conjugation and crosslinking chemistry, and separation science.

Before joining Scully Scott, Dr. Gutierrez gained several years of experience working as a Patent Agent in two other New York intellectual property law firms. Some of Dr. Gutierrez's responsibilities included preparing and prosecuting patent applications in the U.S. and worldwide, as well as assistance in providing patentability, validity, and freedom-to-operate analysis.

Dr. Gutierrez's expertise includes organic and inorganic chemistry, nanotechnology, molecular design, nanoparticle chemistry, nanotube technology, supramolecular self-assembly, metal-ligand coordination polymers, materials science, coatings, polymers, ionic liquids, and fuel cells.

Hesong Cao Hesong Cao, M.S.

Hesong Cao received his B.S. in Mechanical and Electronic Engineering from Beijing Institute of Technology (China) in July 1999. He further received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration in Computer Aided Design and Computer Graphics (CAD/CG) from Beijing Institute of Technology in February 2002. He further received his Master of Intellectual Property from Franklin Pierce Law Center, New Hampshire, in May 2006. His is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Prior to joining Scully, Scott, Murphy & Presser in September 2006, Mr. Cao worked as an electrical engineer at a subsidiary company of State Grid Corporation of China, from February 2002 to July 2002, and worked as a patent engineer at Liu, Shen & Associates (Beijing), from August 2002 to May 2005. From February 2001 to January 2002, he interned with a subsidiary company of China Unicom, participating in a project of developing interface software in communication system and a project of developing image-processing software in database systems.

Mr. Cao has experience in the preparation and prosecution of domestic patent applications relating to computer aided manufacture and design, power transmission and distribution, printing technology, optical storage systems, display devices, molding technology, endoscopic medical instruments, electrical detecting systems, image-processing technology, machine tools, electrical connectors, and home appliances. He also has experience in Chinese practice including preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and reexamination and invalidation.

Dr. Fatih Mercan is a patent agent at the life science group at Scully Scott Murphy & Presser P.C. Dr. Mercan is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Dr. Mercan's current practice includes preparation and prosecution of patent applications, as well as assisting with due diligence matters, patent landscape assessments, freedom to operate analysis, and patentability analysis. Dr. Mercan works with clients in a number of areas specific to life sciences-based technologies, including therapies targeting cancer, cell signaling, genetics, immunological diseases, and infectious diseases, biologics such as antibodies, pharmaceuticals, and diagnostics for personalized medicine.

Dr. Mercan has a background in cell signaling and cancer. Before joining Scully, Scott, Murphy & Presser, Dr. Mercan was a postdoctoral fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory performing research on the epigenetic pathways of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and AML drug target discovery. While conducting research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. Mercan also worked at the CSHL Technology Transfer Office to assist in technology commercialization of inventions and discoveries from research conducted at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Dr. Mercan received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Yale University. His doctoral research focused on the regulatory role of the protein tyrosine phosphatase SHP-2 in nutrient sensitive mTOR pathway. Dr. Mercan received his Bachelor's degree with honors in Molecular Biology and Genetics from Bilkent University. While at Bilkent, Dr. Mercan conducted research on pathways that mediate Breast Cancer progression as part of a research program. Dr. Mercan has authored and co-authored several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and has presented his work at several national and international scientific conferences. He is the co-author of the book chapter "Analysis of Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases and Substrates" in Current Protocols in Molecular Biology, published by John Wiley and Sons.

Jason Kim Jason (Sun-Jong) Kim, Ph.D.

Dr. Jason (Sun-Jong) Kim received his B.S. and M.S., in Electronics from Kwangwoon University and Ph.D. in Information and Communication Systems from Gwangu Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) in S. Korea. Dr. Kim is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Kim's current practice at Scully Scott includes preparation and prosecution of patent applications for a variety of electronics, electrical engineering, and computer arts including semiconductor memory storage devices, system-on-chip integrated circuit designs, display devices, electrical circuit systems, communication systems, network systems, as well as optical electronics devices.

Prior to joining Scully Scott, Dr. Kim gained experience working as a patent agent at a boutique IP firm, where his responsibilities included preparation and prosecution of foreign-origin patent applications pertaining to semiconductor devices, display devices, wired/wireless communication systems, optical systems and electrical circuit systems.

Dr. Kim has many years of experience in various communication system industries including fiber-optic transmission systems and 4G wireless communication networks. Dr. Kim completed a post-doc at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He further worked at Telecommunication Technology Associations (TTA) on 4G wireless system validation and certification projects, and as a patent examiner at the Korean Intellectual and Property Office (KIPO).
